Introduction

“Chinese Taoist Dictionary” is my country’s first large-scale reference book that systematically and comprehensively introduces many categories of Taoist culture, published by China Social Sciences Press. The dictionary has 16 major categories, more than 15,000 entries, and a total of more than 5 million words, including Taoism, Taoist sects, figures, Taoist classics, teachings, teachings and basic knowledge; fasting, rituals and precepts; Spells and fortune-telling techniques; Taoist medicine; Taoist health-preserving skills and martial arts; Inner alchemy; Fangzhong health preservation; Waidan Huangbaishu; Taoist gods and folk beliefs; Taoist literature and art; Dongtian blessed places and temples; appendix names of Taoists, Type index and other categories. Some categories also contain sub-sections, and items with similar meanings should be arranged together as much as possible. The main text of the dictionary is arranged according to categories and subjects. In each category, there are some dictionaries that are really inconvenient to be subdivided, and they are arranged in the order of strokes. This method of organizing content by dictionaries draws on the strengths of the “encyclopedia”. Scholars can read the dictionary as a “Compendium of Taoist Knowledge”. The entries in the dictionary with the same name but different contents in each category are explained separately, and reference items are not listed in the book. The compilation of this dictionary is a major project in the field of Taoist research in recent years. Hu Fuchen, the Institute of Philosophy, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, is the editor-in-chief. More than 100 scholars at home and abroad, including a group of senior and famous scholars, participated in the compilation work. The dictionary was published in Taiwan at the same time.
