Introduction

“Li Xuzhong’s Fate Book” is the earliest relatively complete numerology work in existence. However, there was no description in the Tang Dynasty, and this book was not seen until the Song Dynasty. After the Ming Dynasty, it was also called “Guiguzi Posthumous Documents”. The old title was “written by Zhou Guiguzi and annotated by Tang Lixu”. Before the book, there is the original preface of Li Xuzhong:

In the past, Sima Ji lived in the sun of Hushan. After one night of rain, the wind was clear and the moon was bright. There was an old man who followed the door and called himself Guiguzi. Ji Zhuyin talked about the beginning of heaven and earth, discussing the books of Heluo, his son Jiuchou, and King Wen’s gossip, exploring Yi’s subtle fortune. Until dawn, there are nine posthumous essays. Including three talents, refers to Chen Wanwu. The master of the season knows it. Every word about people’s misfortunes and fortunes, good and bad times, should be like a god’s observation, which is the most precious at that time. Today, I have obtained its old articles, and they have been proved to be quite effective after examination. However, the order of the articles seems to be weird for a long time. The essentials of the five elements may still be recorded. I was afraid that his original technique would be wiped out, so I collected various annotations and compiled them into a collection, not daring to supplement them in reading articles, and pass them on immortally. Gaoming gentleman is not to blame me.

What a beautiful story of a night of “clear wind and moonlight”! However, we know that Sima Ji was mainly active in the Western Han Dynasty, while Guiguzi was the Spring and Autumn and Warring States period in historical records. How did the people of the era meet? This is obviously fictional. However, this is also the origin of the name “Guiguzi Posthumous Document”.

According to Mr. Liang Xiangrun’s textual research, most of the official names mentioned in “Li Xuzhong’s Fate Book” are official positions in the Song Dynasty. Therefore there is no real author. In the Song Dynasty, most of those who admired Li Xuzhong’s fate were based on Li Xuzhong’s dictation, which was handed down from generation to generation.

There were major changes from the Ziping Law in the Song Dynasty. Although this book is not the real work of Li Xuzhong, it preserves the basic system of philosophy in the early days of numerology.
